The current guidelines from the American Heart Association stress two basic building blocks for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The first is to call 911. While CPR is great for prolonging life, it typically isn’t going to fix the problem that caused a person to fall unresponsive in the first place. The second is to push hard and fast in the center of the chest. In your CPR course, instructors tell you to push the chest down approximately two inches at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute. Unless you were blessed to have a metronome nearby when providing CPR, here are some songs you can keep in mind while performing CPR:
Stayin’ Alive- The Bee Gees (103bpm)
What better song to remind you of a proper compression rate? We’ve all seen that scene from The Office, right? AH AH AH AH Stayin’ Alive!
Another One Bites the Dust- Queen (110bpm)
Maybe not the most optimistic song for rescuing; but that epic baseline is the perfect beat to keep in mind!
It’s My Life- Bon Jovi (120bpm)
Rounding out the top of the BPM range, this song reminds you “I ain’t gonna live forever”, but maybe that can be delayed while saving a life!
Baby Shark- Pinkfong (115 bpm)
Aside from perhaps looking silly while doing CPR to this song, you’ll have it stuck in your head all day!
Teenagers- My Chemical Romance (112 bpm)
I’ve got nothing for this one, to be completely honest. It’s a catchy song!
Never Gonna Give You Up- Rick Astley (113 bpm)
Nothing is worse than coming to after collapsing than realizing that you were RickRolled! The horror!
Pink Pony Club- Chappell Roan (107 bpm)
You’re going to need to push hard at this tempo to make sure your patient can keep dancing down at the PPC.
We’re All in this Together- High School Musical (116 bpm)
This is a great reminder of the necessity of teamwork in an emergency! Make sure you have specific people calling the emergency number and grabbing an AED!
All Star- Smash Mouth (104 bpm)
Shrek and Fiona would definitely get CPR certified, especially for the kids!
Theme from “The Magic School Bus” (113 bpm)
If you’re like me, watching this show WAS my childhood! The Frizz would be honored to lend her theme song to lifesaving!
Keep these songs in mind next time you are practicing your skills! What is your favorite CPR song?
